Lake pollution is a type of water pollution that involves the contamination of lakes. It occurs when pollutants are directly or indirectly introduced into the lakes without proper treatment so as to remove any harmful or toxic compounds.
The pollution harms both plants and organisms living in these bodies of water.Mostly all cases result in the damage of not only the individual species and populations, but also to the natural biological communities.
Pollution can be caused by many factors but can be broadly categorized into:
1) Physical Causes - This occurs due to physical processes like soil erosion and mostly occur naturally but can be influenced by human activities
2) Chemical Causes - This is due to introduction of chemical compounds like pesticides, fertilizers, industrial effluents and nuclear wastes. This has the most impacts on a lake often leading to complete destruction of the ecosytem in a lake
3) Biological Causes - This is due to actions of living organisms. Manure from animals can lead to the overgrowth of aquatic water plants like the water hyacinths which lead to low oxygen concentration thus death of living organisms in the lake.
